Today, I have build a Serial Cable, to connect the Data I/O 29b to an old PC.

(details are here: http://www.retroclinic.com/leopardcats/dio/dataioserial.htm)

Connection works via COM1 8,n,1 9600baud

Here some screenprints of the PROMlink 6.1 Software.

I’m now able to transfer dumps via this PC, to the Data I/O, to burn them.

  1. Took me a while to find a contact page!

It is a long time since I last saw an RC25 (almost 30 years) but you might be interested to know that there is a 0.25w resistor that was underrated and prone to burning out. I think it was on the controller board.

I was once told (by a second line support engineer) that this was to ensure that older boards would be returned for repair allowing the firmware to be upgraded.

As our systems were in places that DIGITAL couldn’t reach we used to train the system engineers to replace this component if it failed, unfortunately I can’t remember which resistor it was (and I think I threw out my course notes a couple of years ago).

Next time you have the drive opened up it might be worth checking to see if you have any resistors going black – if I remember correctly the unit would stop working when the resistor failed, but it could be repaired by simply replacing the failed resistor with one having a higher power rating

    • Hi Mike,

Due to the huge amount of span I have disabled this function, but missed this on the blog page.
So good for me, as I know now that there is maybe a quite simple fix available for my new dual RC25 which is not working by now.

Many thanks for this information, much appreciated.
